With matching miniature in case marked F.A. FLINT. LIVERPOOL ST, HOBART. Comes with copies of medal roll, newspaper articles and research. Lieutenant Reginald Norman Joseph Stourton was born in Morven, Tasmania, Australia on 4/10/1877. Educated at Hutchins School and Christ College Hobart and later at Surbiton House Naval School in England. He enlisted with the 1st Scottish Horse rising to the rank of Sergeant (service # 7666, later 577). He served from 30/1/01 to 29/4/02. Discharged medically unfit, he returned to Tasmania and was commissioned as a Lieutenant to serve in the 3rd Australian Commonwealth Horse (Tasmania) having been given command of the Ross detachment of ā€˜Iā€™ Company. At wars end, he returned to Tasmania on 9/8/1902 and was presented with his medal by Lady Edeline Strickland. Post war he returned to farming in Tasmania, dying in 1943.

Described as:

Ex Sid Thurgar Collection and previously Noble Numismatics Sale 116B (lot 5136) (Note that when last sold, the medal had no clasp for South Africa 1901).

D. McPherson, Enl.15Feb1901 at Melbourne, Vic in 2nd Scottish Horse; Disch.16Oct1901 at Cape Town, South Africa, time expired and character Exemplary; address after discharge, Bungeeltap, Ballan, Vic; confirmed as a Scout with Scottish Horse.

D.McPherson was related to Dugald McPherson, a Scottish pioneer settler who arrived in Victoria in 1840. Bungeeltap Homestead at Mt Egerton, Ballan, was originally settled by Cowle and Stead in 1838 and acquired by Dugald McPherson in 1854. In about 1863 he erected a two-storey Gothic style stone house there. Although the property had the top storey removed in 1922 it is still on the Heritage Listing of the National Trust.
