Hello Meurig,
I rather like medals to the Militia and members of the Active Service Companies that came from the Volunteers with the county regiments.
This man did not have to do what he did, he could have just continued to make tiles in Sheffield, but, did not.
Have you got many yourself, I don't know what the Welsh, SWB and RWF were doing from memory without checking, but, they are all quite nice I feel and well worth having.
I think well over 16,000 volunteers served in the ASC's alone during the war.
Regards Frank

Hello Frank

Me too, these volunteers are fascinating people.

In my regimental collection for the SWB I have QSAs to the 3rd militia bn and men from the volunteer bns.

Militia men also served directly with a regular battalion - I just purchased such a QSA to a Gloucester Rgt man POW at Dewetsdorp.

Additionally I am trying to collect RE volunteers - these detachments numbered about 150 men so are scarce. Apart from the Royal Mons RE their medals are just named "RE" so are hard to spot.

There are also the RGA volunteers - but these are named as such. I have recently bought the medals to the RQMS of the Elswick battery.

Regards
Meurig

Hello Meurig,
Good heavens, I don't think I can remember the last time I saw a medal to a member of the Elswick battery, so the RQMS would be one William Blaing?

That's the man, Frank.

Very nice long service group - Afghan, Egypt & South Africa. :)

Hello Meurig,
That is a very good group to a very interesting recipient, a 14 year old shoemaker, was he not, I noted that annotation in red ink on his original (first) set of papers "Service in Egypt with Indian Expeditionary Force to reckon as continuous Indian Service" very nice indeed.
