There is nothing on the base of the cup. I check our records and this donation came from the Municipality of Harrismith. This story were also published in newspapers and also in a publication of Martiens van Bart, former editor of THE BURGER Newspaper.

Hello Elmarie,

I was reminded of this when leafing through your “100 Objects” book, and wondered how the pudding would have been inserted into a 155 mm Long Tom shell.
Is there any chance you might be able to post the dimensions of the cup? It would have to be very small indeed to have been loaded through the fuze socket. The size of the cup might give an indication as to how else it could have been placed within the projectile.

I recently posted images of one of the plum puddings that were fired into Ladysmith. This can be seen here: Ladysmith Xmas Plum Pudding

Interestingly, the only extant shells I know of with the “Compliments of the Season” inscription were fired from 75 mm Krupp QF guns.
