Hello everyone,
I’ve been researching men who are on York Memorials and in doing so am finding it hard to find where they were buried in South Africa. For example, Pte James Ryan died of typhoid (Enteric Fever) on 4 October 1900 in Pretoria, but I cannot locate where he was buried. Is there a site where it’s possible to search for the graves of those who died in South Africa and were buried there? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance and best regards,
John

There is a tome called "In Memorium" by Steve Watt.
It is published by University of Natal Press but you will find it is out of print. I happened to get (what i think was) the last copy at the Ladysmith museum a few weeks ago.

You may be able to find 1 of 1 of the numerous publication search engines.
In regards to your chap he is listed as being interred in Pretoria number 2 cemetery. No further details shown apart from the reference C.Vol number 38.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Simon

John,
A copy of "In Memoriam" will turn up at booksellers and on eBay very occasionally, but around £100 is the general asking price.
A tad pricey but a mine of information and probably one of the most accurate of the casualty records (only records deaths not wounded, POW etc.).
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Simon & Steve,
I really appreciate your quick replies. It looks like I’ll have to scrounge around for a copy of Watts’ book. I’ll check to see if there are photos of Pretoria No.2 cemetery online.

Thanks very much again!
