A postcard of Baden- Powell by Harry Payne
Published by Tuck's Empire series Number 281.
It bore the inscription: Well done, Gallant little Mafeking.
The Empire is proud of you'. As you can see, there was some confusion about the exact date of the relief of Mafeking: However, Tuck played it safe and brought out postcards with three different dates, 16th,17th and 18th of May 1900.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Another postcard from the Raphael Tuck, Empire Series, number 1288.
It was copied from an illustration which was painted by Frenchman Faustin B, entitled Graced with Victory.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

This French series seems to be never-ending. Fourteen cards so far, but I know the the German version "Gruss vom Kriegsschauplatz" runs to over thirty.

"Théâtre de la Guerre"

14. Varus, Varus, rends-moi mes mules!

Keep them coming!
I am struck by the fierce antipathy towards Joseph Chamberlain in Europe, whereas in South Africa the most detested were (and remain) Rhodes, Jameson, Milner and Kitchener.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Europe really didn't like the British in 1900! Another series (Dutch I think) by artist Jean Veber.
