I found 2 records on Ancestry, see below. The same person appears to enlisted twice? It could be the person in the records you posted, or someone else? I will have to investigate further to see if they refer to my grandfather or another Patrick Fitzgerald, unfortunately it is common name in Ireland?

I agree, there are many Fitzgerald's to check out. I wish you well in your future research. I would be very interested in knowing which Regiment your Grandfather served in whilst taking part in the Relief of Mafeking.

Fitzgerald - Based on attestation papers on Find My Past 1368 & 1395 are indeed the same man.

His April 1896 attestation ended this way:



He had a second and more successful go:





Note the date of 6th April 1897 fits exactly with the attestation date of 5095 as supplied previously by Dave F.

As other details also seem to marry I conclude 1368 = 1395 = 5095 and none of them are your GF.
