The Kaplan roll of the QSA with clasp "Relief of Mafeking" shows no entry for any Fitzgerald (P. J. or otherwise) under the heading "2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers".

Hi Dave,

I think that the Patrick Fitzgerald you found may well be my grandfather?

He was born in 1878 at Birr, Offaly but lived all his home life in Roscrea, Tipperary.

We know from our family history that Patrick served with the Royal Fusiliers, the 15th Hussars and the Royal Irish Rifles during 20 or so years in the British Army.

I think it is likely that he first enlisted in c1897 with the Leinster Regiment. The Leinster’s Home Depot was at Birr Barracks which is only 12 miles from Roscrea. We also know that he served in India and South Africa which agrees with the information you found. He may have been with the Leinster’s during the Boer War?

You mentioned that your Patrick Fitzgerald’s family members do not match our grandfather’s. I wonder if you can reply with a list of those family members so I can compare with our family tree.

Thanks for your assistance.
Steve…

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting the attestation records for Patrick Fitzgerald. As you previously advised, this is not my grandfather, whose parents were John and Fanny Fitzgerald.

I found 2 records on Ancestry, see below. The same person appears to enlisted twice? It could be the person in the records you posted, or someone else? I will have to investigate further to see if they refer to my grandfather or another Patrick Fitzgerald, unfortunately it is common name in Ireland?
Thanks again…
Steve
