I don't suppose anyone would be able to help - these photographs include my great-great-grandfather Thomas Henry Haworth in Africa. I'm trying to identify what regiment he was in so I can hopefully discover where he was during the Boer War but I'm not sure where to start. I've searched all over to try and find records of him and I can't seem to find them. The only other info I have another photograph of him in what I think is more of a dress uniform - darker colour white belt but I don't believe this is from Boer War, maybe his time in WW1 instead. FYI he was from Ramsbottom Lancashire.

Hello,

7283 Lance-Corporal Thomas Haworth served with the 1st Volunteer Active Service Company, East Lancashire Regiment. Service papers give his place of birth as Ramsbottom.

The first photograph appears to show the men with 2nd Volunteer Battalion shoulder titles (a "2" over a "V" over the regiment's name - a close up of one of these would help), in which case it may have been taken in England. Lance-Corporal Haworth served with the 2nd V.B. East Lancs Rgt before volunteering for active service.

Service records give his name as Howarth, which might explain why you had difficulty finding him.

Hope this helps.

Neville

Yes that's absolutely amazing thank you so much. It has helped and I have managed to find him listed with his medals. If I could please ask where you managed to find his service papers as I still can't seem to locate them even with his alternate surname spelling?
