I have just acquired a pair as above to 5 Tpr J Gorman, Loch's Horse (on the QSA) and to 851 Sjt. J Gorman, Midland M.R. (on the KSA)

This chap also had service with the Scott's Railway Guards and was with McDonald's Squad, C.C.F. (whatever that may mean)

Aside from what is available in Stirling's are there any other research avanues one could pursue to find out more about the aman and his regiments?

Regards

Rory

I'd start with WO126/121 and then move on to WO126/91-92,
after a careful look at the usual rolls of course! :woohoo:

Sorry, I had to dash off yesterday, but, the issues here should be easy to deal with as one would for any of the other SAMIF units, Loch's Horse was a class C unit, raised for general service during the war, recruited here in February 1900 and for official purpose, in the SAMIF returns on the 16th of March, it was in effect disbanded here in April the following year.
The corps own Colt Gun Battery was formed a little later on and became the Ross Battery, it was disbanded in September 1900 at Capetown.
The Midland Mounted Rifles were really rather like a class D unit and a KSA to any of McAndrew's boys is well worth having as Colonel McAndrew was a very fine officer, the KSA is also very scarce, okay, so perhaps not as scarce as an example to the Prince of Wales Light Horse, but, I'm sure you get the idea.
So for these two you should take a careful look in WO126 as mentioned above, I hope his papers have survived, a good pair of medals.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Frank

I am very pleased with the group - Gorman, and I have his Loch's Horse attestation paper, saw service with Scott's Railway Guards as well before going on to the M.M.R. I append a copy of the KSA roll which is almost a snapshot of his career.

I had no idea that KSA's to the POWLH were scarce. I have a QSA/KSA pair to them. H.T. Gibb.

Hello Rory,
Some papers to men who served in Scott's Railway Guards are also in WO126/127-129 at Kew from memory.
P of W's LH were raised as a special anti commando unit and had the job of dealing with De Wet, their KSA's are really rather rare, most men would not have been entitled to receive one!
