I have a QSA to a chap who was with the 30th Coy.9th Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry.

On his papers mention is made under Campaigns that he fought at Thaba Nchu, Heilbron and Lindley. This last is of course where the 13th Battalion surrendered but I can find no reference online to the 30th being there at the same time.

Does anyone have any clues or pointers?

Regards

Rory

Rory,

The 9th Battalion were part of the 1st Yeomanry Brigade under Lord Methuen who tried to relieve the beleaguered 13th Battalion. When they got to Lindley, the 13th had surrendered, the town was back in Boer hands and they fought desperately to fight through the Boers on the hills to rescue the prisoners of war who they could see being marched away in the distance. Their attempt failed.

Best wishes,

Justin

Hello Rory

I recommend Will Bennett's Absent-Minded Beggar - all about the IY in the ABW. A very useful book.

He credits the attempt to retrieve the 13th bn on the 5th, 10th and 3rd bns IY, no mention of the 9th - perhaps they were in reserve?.
