One of today's arrivals is this Defence of Kimberley to 454 PTE. A. O'Rielly, Kimberley Volunteer Regiment. These chaps were very active during the siege and took part in many of the prominent skirmishes e.g. Carter's Ridge. Alfred Timothy O'Rielly was discharged on health grounds (defective eyesight) on 13 November 1900. He later resurrected his career as a Squadron Sergeant Major with the Peninsula Horse but wasn't eligible for a Cape Colony clasp on account of already having the DoK one.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the medal to Pte Aldred when it sells at Noonan's later today.

I have let Noonan's know about its veracity and they have set a low estimate but there is no saleroom notice to warn prospective bidders.

Aldred's medal sold for a hammer price of GBP 260. Totals: GBP 334.88. R 7,000. AUD 560. NZD 620. CAD 520. USD 390. EUR 360.

This is around the usual hammer price at Noonan's for a regular LNLR DoK QSA.

The QSA (2) Defence of Kimberley, Orange Free State (4028 Pte E. Whitehead, 1: L.N. Lanc: Regt) sold in July 2020 for a hammer price of £240.

Aldred's medal is now showing as unsold so Noonan's must have reversed the transaction.

The QSA to Pte Aldred is being re-advertised by Noonan's.

The description now says 'Not entitled to Defence of Kimberley clasp.'

Estimate £80-£100.
