I have added a nominal roll for the Shropshire Light Infantry today. This contains the names of 2,249 men.

Using The Whitewash Brigade by Platt et all (1998), I then tried to cross reference the named of the men who received the Hong Kong Plague Medal (HKPM) against the SLI nominal roll to see how many such combinations exist.

The task is somewhat complicated by the fact that no complete nominal list for the HKPM exists. The many names contained in The Whitewash Brigade have been compiled from many sources (contemporary records, medals in museums and on the market etc).

This leads to two lists. One for men of the SLI who definitely received the HKPM and another list of possible recipients.

William Price was born in the Parish of St Peters, Hereford, and enlisted into the Shropshire Light Infantry at Shrewsbury on 21 September 1899. He served in Hong Kong during the plague, in India, and in South Africa during the Boer War, and was discharged on 2 April 1902. He re-enlisted into the 1st Battalion, Herefordshire Regiment, on 8 August 1914, and served at Suvla Bay and Gallipoli from 28 August 1915. Also entitled to 1914-15 Star and Victory medal.

The fraying on the ribbon is an interesting effect too.

Lockdales have an intriguing HKPM in their next sale which indicates a QSA was awarded too.

There are a few P Faheys on the QSA roll but more information is needed to confirm the HKPM & QSA.
