Lol no. Someone had a bunch made up here in Australia by a local embroidery place just to have a representative example and this is one of those.

Hello Mike

With regard to the men in the photo .

On the 11th of August 1901, Captain Eaton moving north from Waaikech with 30 men, sent Corporal Key and his squad to cut off a party of Boers. Realising they were outnumbered, Key got his men into a kraal and held off the Boers for several hours.Trooper James was killed, Trooper Faltenhine was severely wounded, while Troopers Ryall and Jackson were slightly wounded. Key's horse had been shot. He sent Ryall and Jackson out on their mounts , and then went out on foot to capture a Boer horse under heavy close range fire. Troopers Mack and Gibbons provided covering fire for the retreat. Key, Ryall, Falhentine, Jackson and Gibbons were all awarded the Badge for Gallantry.

On the 11th of October, at Rooikop, Captain Eaton sent Trooper Anderson and his squad to occupy some kopjes before daylight. However, due to the rough terrain they only got into position after first light.
When a scout accidentally discharged his rifle, the Boers spotted their position less than a mile off, and quickly moved to occupy a higher kopje some 500 yards away. Troopers Anderson, Muir and Young also ran for the same hill, arriving there first, with the Boers only being 50 yards from them. The Boers shouted at the three men to surrender, but they threw themselves to the ground instead, and began firing. They defended their position for two hours, killing two Boers and wounding several others, until Captain Eaton and the main body came to their assistance.

Hi

I have extracted the citations for the Gallantry Badge awards, from the MMSSA journal February 2001, Miscellany of Honours page 6-17.
These were originally compiled by Mike Lukich.

The Badge for Gallantry was briefly mentioned in 18 of the 58 located records. Usually simply the word or words “Gallantry - Circ. Memo no 44” or “Awarded SAC Badge of Gallantry by I.G. GO 92 of 25.10.02”, or simply “Badge for Gallantry”, or similar.
Brief details of the action for which they were commended, or which they appear to have been commended, are given in 28 of the records obtained, while details for three recipients were obtained from the Public Record Office in Britain and a further eight were found mentioned in the London Gazette.
In one single case, in addition to the details of the action resulting in the award, there are papers covering the proceedings of a Board of Officers established to make recommendations concerning the award.
It is surprising that only in this one case was the Board of Officers Proceedings for the Award of the Badge found with the Record of Conduct and Service of the recipient.
Board of Officers Proceedings
The award of the S.A.C Badge for Gallantry to C147 CpI. John Munsell Reeves is detailed in the papers covering the Board of Officers proceedings found with his S.A.C Record of Conduct and Service.
These are reproduced below.
John Munsell Reeves was born on 14th October 1878. He was single, a farmer and hailed from Epsom, Surrey, England.
He was appointed as a 3rd Class Trooper on 26-03-1901 and promoted Corporal on 01-06-1901. He served in “C” Division which covered the Eastern Transvaal and Swaziland, with Headquarters at Heidelberg.
The papers concerning the Board of Officers established to consider the award to him of the Badge for Gallantry are as follows:
1.) GALLANTRY BADGE
O.C. 4 Troop
Val
In accordance with instructions received from Head Quarters, enquiries by Boards of Officers must be held in all cases, when N.C.O.’s or men are recommended for Gallantry Badges.
Please hold a Board in the case of No C 147 Corporal J.M. Reeves giving a concise account, duly certified, of the circumstances under which this N.C.O. displayed great gallantry at Van Tondershoek on 8-2-02.
Your attention is specially directed to General Order No 70 of 24th May 1902, a copy of which is attached for your information.
1.) SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTABULARY “C" DIVISION To Capt. Capell, S.A.C. , G228.
Will you kindly act as President on this Board and decide time and place. Evidence is procurable here

The Board having assembled pursuant to order, proceeds to take evidence.
1st Evidence
No C2 T.S.M. J.D. Willson No 4 Troop “C” SAC
After the action on the 8th Feb. at van Tondershoek, I reported the circumstances of Corpl Reeves gallant conduct to Capt Capell. They were as follows. I was in charge of a squad on the extreme left, during the fight at van Tondershoek, when retiring, we were closely pursued by about 30 Boers at ranges from 60 yds to 200 yds, and fired at by others about 300 to 400 yds away. As we galloped on I heard Tpr Russell call to me for help, he was about 200 yds in rear of me.
As I pulled my horse up, to look round, I saw Corpl Reeves gallop back to the assistance of Tpr Russell, take him on his horse, and gallop towards us again, he overtook us and we returned together. All this was done under a very heavy fire.
(Signed) J.D. Willson T.S.M.
2nd Evidence
No C435 III Cl Tpr J. Russell No 4 Troop “C” SAC states
I was one of a squad under TSM Willson on the extreme left flank, during the fight at van Tondershoek, on the 8th Feb 1902.
Whilst retiring from our position, on to the main body, my horse was wounded in the shoulder and fell with me. I saw TSM Willson and Corpl Reeves in front of me and I shouted for help: Corpl Reeves galloped back towards me and took me on to his horse, we were under a very heavy fire at the time at close range and I believe that Corpl Reeves was instrumental in saving my life.
(Signed) John Russel Tpr SAC
OPINION OF THE BOARD
The Board having carefully considered the evidence given are of the opinion that No C147 Corpl J.M.Reeves, displayed great personal Gallantry at van Tondershoek on 8th February 1902 and Recommend that he be awarded the Badge for Gallantry
Signed at Wonderfontein this 28th day of July 1902

C1293 Sgt W.R. Pedley DCM
There is no mention of the Badge for Gallantry on Sgt Pedley’s Service Record but the following details were obtained from papers in the Public Record Office in Britain.
The Inspector General wishes to place on record the following instance of gallantry in action on the part of Capt Cornwall, Sgt Pedley and Corporal Cuss all of 13 Troop, “C” Division, on the 8ih February.
Capt Cornwall took a party of 10 men to cover the removal to camp of wagon and mill from Aug Wyst (478). While he was so engaged his covering party were driven out by a force of Boers. Capt Cornwall and Sgt Pedley being well mounted pluckily held a hill to cover the retreat of the rest, who were on tired horses. This they succeeded in doing till the enemy advancing in three parties attacked from different sides at once, they then mounted to get away, but Capt Cornwall’s horse broke away while he was in the act of mounting and threw him down. Sgt Pedley thereupon turned and galloped back to the officer’s assistance under a very heavy fire at 60 yds distance, and took him up onto his horse. The horse was, however, shot dead the next minute and both were captured.
Meanwhile, profiting by this diversion, the rest of the men had been able to get away safely except three, who were captured, one of them being wounded. Transport Corporal Cuss was in charge of the wagon oxen, and when the drivers ran away, he managed single handed to get 18 of the 20 oxen safely into camp, closely pursued by Boers and under very heavy fire.
The whole performance of the Officers and Non-commissioned Officers was most creditable”
He is mentioned in Army Order 523 of 3.4.02 for his part in the action at Oliphantsrivier on 8.2.02 described above.
Sgt Pedley also on the 26.12.01 showed great gallantry at Onverwacht when surrounded by a large party of Boers and eventually captured.
