5011 Sgt.Edward Wood Royal West Surrey Regiment.

Edward Wood was a 23 year old labourer when he enlisted with "The Queens" Royal West Surrey Regiment in London on 22nd January 1896
More than an average height for that time of 5ft 8" and weighing 145lbs he his described as a fresh complexion.
His first campaign was to West Africa where he spent 174 days, this entitled him to the East & West Africa medal with the clasp Sierra Leone 1898-99

He returned home on 29th September 1898 until 20th October 1899 when he made the journey to South Africa.
The West Surrey's were in Hildyard's Brigade and were to figure prominently at the Battle of Colenso.

This page from "With The Flag To Pretoria" shows them doing stirling work.
Sgt.Wood received a gun shot wound to the temple during the action which is listed as "Severely wounded"

I assume this must of been a graze because he only spent 20 days in hospital and then was returned to duty, presumably G.S.head wounds were always described as "severe"

He then continued in South Africa serving there until 2nd March 1904
This campaign earned him the QSA with clasps Laing's Nek,Transvaal,RofL,Orange Free State and Tugela Heights.
His KSA has the two date clasps, all confirmed in WO100/166 and WO100/319
His West Africa is confirmed in WO100/92
