Hi

I would like to know what actions my maternal grandfather took part in and how can I obtain his service record?

I have found out he served in 5th princess charlottes of wales dragoon guards
He used to tell me when I was a very young boy about his horses in the cavalry but not about any nasty stuff.

Thanks Peter Flatres

Does your maternal grandfather have a name perhaps?

Hi David

Thanks for asking.

My grandfathers name was...Thomas James Emberson..Private 4660.

I believe he served in the first war as well as I have seen photos of him in the uniform of the time looking older than he would have been in the Boer war as he was only 18 when he first went to Africa.
I am afraid I do not know a lot more about his service. as he passed away in 1966 .

My rather basic cd roll of QSAs to the Cavalry shows your GF with clasps "Cape Colony", "Orange Free State" and "Transvaal" and medal issued 20/6/04. You may obtain his service record (hopefully) from a commercial site.
You may also discover whether he was issued with a date clasp or clasps or a Kings medal. On the "books" section of this site you will find "Our Regiments in South Africa" by Stirling- and it contains a good digest of the activities of 5DG. Using his arrival date in SA and Stirling's book, you should get an idea of his unit's activities.
Good luck with your quest
