Hello,

New member here, this is my first post, so apologies if this is a silly question. I was hoping for a bit more information about my Paternal Great-Grandfather's military history here. My Great-Grandfather was Daniel Pieter Jacobus de Waal who was born in Pretoria 30/08/1881, and died in Newcastle, KZN, South Africa on 14/03/1969, is this the same person, is there any further info that can be provided at all, or am I just looking in completely the wrong place?

Incidentally his son, my Grandfather was (Military Number - 105745) Gerhard Cornelius de Waal, who was a POW in WW2, I have his medals, so I was curious if any existed for my Great Grandfather's time in the second Boer War at all, I'm aware that his house was burned down and then they had to rebuild it, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank-you for accepting my registration!

Regards
André

Andre, if your GGF Daniel Pieter Jacobus de Waal) applied for the Anglo BoereOorlogsmedalje, his service will be recorded(in his own handwriting) on his Vorm B. Hi-res scans of the Vorm Bs can be obtained for a small fee from Dewald Nel, email [email protected]
Frequently there is more than one man with the same name - if so, provide for Dewald an address, a commando or date of birth may help find the right one.
Incidentally, was your GGF this Boer War PoW who is on the War Museum of the Boer Republics database?

Andre, it certainly seems that's the same man. I find strange his identification as an OVS burgher, whereas it looks as if he was captured at Tweespruit, Pretoria and djb posted him as a Pretoria Cdo burgher, hence ZAR not OVS...
Once you get the Vorm B from Dewald, that will be cleared up. You can see what a Vorm B looks like here:

Thanks again Rob, that's very helpful! That's probably my fault, perhaps I should have posted in a different part of the forum or something, I just chose this thread as the name was the same, sorry I'm a newbie!!
