War service: He took part in the Ashanti Expedition under Sir Garnet Wolseley in 1873-4 (Medal). In 1881 he served in the Boer War with the mounted Infantry in Natal and on the Transvaal Frontier. Burmese Expedition, 1886 (medal with clasp); Expedition to Dongola, 1896 (Egyptian medal; medal). He acted as chief staff Officer to the Army of occupation in Egypt from 1896-8. When the Boer War broke out, he raised 10,000 men for Town Guards in the Cape Peninsula in 1901, and in 1902 he commanded the Namaqualand Field Force. He retired in 1904. He married in 1894 a daughter of Commodore H Caldwell, RN, CB.
