Hi all

So here I am sunning myself in Minorca Reading Thank God We Kept The Flag Flying, when I asked myself the question, is there a book or reference for each battle or engagement that has the detail of the units and casualties? Even in this brilliant book, the skirmish at Rietfontein only lists four batteries of artillery. Yes, I can look up the casualties for some help, but if there were none, what then? I assume there will be some papers for MID or the full report?

I am just thinking that a chronological list of all engagements with the units would certainly help in identifying many things, if not items being sold and if they are of interest?

Doug.

So close it is scary!! As I collect the Natal Field Force, I could cut this down a little by the units obviously, but the only other detail that I was thinking of is where you have defence of Ladysmith, for instance, there were many battles and skirmishes during this time. Take the so called battle of Ladysmith when White tried to give the Boers a crushing which led to the first major defeat for him. No clasps for this one and to just have a defence of Ladysmith is far too passive, so is there something out there with more detail I wonder. For instance, where would the Rietfontein clash come in the scheme of things?

Anyway, I think I could start to put a similar thing together but like most things of this nature, it will take time but I think, for me anyway, it will be well worth it and so much could be learnt!

Thanks.

Doug.

Doug,

This is the source of this information. Page 24 gives a summary by engagement.

angloboerwar.com/images/pdf/TimesHistory07-02a.pdf

Adding to the information from The Times and SA Honours and Awards, I started to list all the clasps by unit but only managed the complete the cavalry. I haven't been back to the list for several years now.
