The attached image refers to a William Dade who apparently served in both the Mashonaland Squadron,British South Africa Police and Kitchener's Fighting Scouts. I cannot find him in any of the TNA references quoted, nor do I remember where or how I found the image - it is even possible it was from this Forum, in which case I apologise for wasting people's time. If anyone can tell me in simple terms how to obtain a copy of Dade's enrolment papers ( bearing in mind that according to WO126, Mashonaland Squadron did not exist)and/or when and where he died if he was killed in action, I should be most grateful.

Thanks.

George

Hello George,

I think the image you have attached is from Find My Past.
I have looked at Boer War casualties but no listing for your man.

Regards
Paul :)

The BSAP's "Mashonaland" Squadron was not part of the SAMIF, surviving material was in Harare, but, it certainly did exist and Dade served within it, however, the first thing to do would be a careful look in WO126/76-82 regarding his time in the 1st KFS.

I am afraid I misled you when I said the record did not exist. The comment was not meant in a literal sense, only that Mashonaland Squadron British South African Police does not appear anywhere in the relevant alphabetical list of Units covered by WO 126. I have followed your advice and am now waiting for TNA to give me an estimate of the cost of photocopying the 'D' part of WO 126/77. If, as I anticipate, the cost will be prohibitive I shall have to hope my wife will sign me a pass for one day when we are in that neck of the woods on family business later this month.
Thanks again.

Hello George,
The BSAP were never part of the SAMIF and so you will not find anything in WO126 as far as they are concerned, regarding KFS papers in WO126, you are only looking for a single man, so there would be no point in looking at and then making copies of other papers.
Regards Frank

Hi Frank.
Since William Dade appears to have been in Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, I reckon his papers should be in WO126/77 C-F. I assumed TNA would not look for and copy just that one item but I did hope they would copy all the 'Ds' so that I could wade through them myself. If as I expect, the cost means I shall have to go to Kew I am assuming it will still be necessary to go through every set of papers until I find my man. Still, I have done more onerous searches in the past and the pleasure of finding what you are looking for far outweighs the effort.
Many thanks for your continued interest.

George
