Dr Herbert Davies died at the Welsh Hospital, Springfontein, on June 15th, 1900 and is buried at the military cemetery there.




I found a fascinating account of the Royal Welsh Hospital in South Africa samilitaryhistory.org/vol123sw.html

Having worked myself at the North Staffordshire Infirmary I'm saddened that, in my time there, there wasn't a plaque to the memory of Doctor Davies; maybe there'd been one which had become lost. A visit to St David's Cathedral is called for.

Does anyone have photos of the headstones and inscriptions for Doctors Davies and Jones, and Nurse Sage?

Dear Berenice,

How very interesting. It turns out that Dr Davies (no relation) is well remembered and has no less than four memorials:

1. There is a brass plaque to his memory in The Hospital, Lancaster (as it was called around 1904);

2. He and Dr Thomas Jones are remembered on a plaque in the Medical School of Manchester University;

3. He is commemorated in the memorial window in the chapel at Shrewsbury School and named on the plaque beneath;

4. He and the other casualties from the Welsh Hospital are named on The Welsh National Memorial in Cardiff.

The Lancaster in Lancashire, England? Because that's the hospital I work in now.
