Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen........

A little addition to this thread.....

I have just finished going through a collection of QSA's as singles, KSA pairs and in groups..... The owner had catalogued them in several different ways, one of them was by clasp / bar....

He is a general collector with no specific theme as to regiment or battle so therefore would have a wide variety of bars.....

There were a total of 356 medals with a total of 1224 bars.......

The breakdown is as follows...... (I have rounded to nearest 0.1 percent)

Clasp / Bar ..........................................Percentage

CAPE COLONY...................................... 22.0 %
NATAL............................................ 1.4 %
RHODESIA......................................... 1.0 %
RELIEF OF MAFEKING............................... 0.5 %
DEFENCE OF KIMBERLEY............................. 0.5 %
TALANA........................................... 0.5 %
ELANDSLAAGTE..................................... 0.5 %
DEFENCE OF LADYSMITH............................. 1.4 %
BELMONT.......................................... 0.4 %
MODDER RIVER..................................... 0.5 %
TUGELA HEIGHTS................................... 2.4 %
RELIEF OF KIMBERLEY.............................. 1.1 %
PAARDEBERG....................................... 2.5 %
ORANGE FREE STATE................................ 16.5 %
RELIEF OF LADYSMITH.............................. 2.5 %
DRIEFONTEIN...................................... 2.0 %
WEPENER.......................................... 0.3 %
DEFENCE OF MAFEKING.............................. 0.3 %
TRANSVAAL........................................ 16.2 %
JOHANNESBURG..................................... 2.7 %
LAING'S NEK...................................... 2.4 %
DIAMOND HILL..................................... 1.5 %
WITTEBERGEN...................................... 1.9 %
BELFAST.......................................... 3.3 %
SOUTH AFRICA 1901................................ 8.7 %
SOUTH AFRICA 1902................................ 7.2 %

Maybe this will answer the question raised......

Mike, certainly a very interesting read. But I fear that although the collection is spectacular and must really be something to behold [he says green with envy] that the sample size of 356 medals is probably too small. It may well indicate some trends but has the potential to be skewed on some clasps.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark.....

Yes I can agree that it can be skewed but as a general collection and with no specific theme like most of us I thought it would be a good example..... Oh yes there were also 71 medals with no clasps.....

Thats an interesting survey with some interesting results, the aforementioned Wittebergen at 1.9% is not as numerous in this collection.
That is quite an enviable collection, one worth lots of hours of research!
Thanks for posting.

A good question.

The Register has 83000 medal entitlements and a quick count tonight gives the following:

4.67% Laing's Nek
5.02% Wittebergen
7.50% Belfast
9.06% Johannesburg

I think Johannesburg and Belfast will come top. Robert's large Army descended on Jo'burg and at Belfast his army (somewhat reduced) met Buller's large Army.

The Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith clasps are a minortiy but that may be well because those entitlements aren't well represented in The Register (yet!).
