Anyone know what how many casualties there were at the engagement, on 28th May 1900?

I know of the following, all members of the Lancashire Hussars: -
Killed - Private John Fairclough.
Wounded - Private Fred Roberts (lost a leg), Private Swire/Swires, Private James Dancer.

SAFF says 19; six killed and thirteen wounded. I will post the names later this day. There is an interesting account of the action at Kheis on 28/5/00 in TH4 p. 227-8. An interesting action indeed; well conducted and well planned by Col. Adye.

Hello Berenice

Actually the casualty total is 6 KiA and 20 Wo, there were more units involved than the Lancs Hussars (32 Coy IY). I have just done a quick check in The Times and added one more that is not in SAFF:

32 Coy - 3 KiA, 7 wounded
5 Coy - 3 KiA, 7 wounded
Welsh Regt - 1 mortally wounded - Cpt AHU Tindal - incorrectly recorded in Dooner as wounded 29-05.
Glouc Regt - 1 mortally wounded, 2 severely wounded
Nesbitt's Horse - 2 wounded

This is the entry from my gazetteer for Kheis:
[2822: 2850-2205] a farm and postal agency (closed 1899) in the Cape Colony (Hay district; Northern Cape), 115 km west of Griekwastaad. The pont at Kheis was ordered to be sunk in March 1900 by Brig-Gen H.H. Settle. In May 1900, about 400 rebel burghers formed a laager on the farm which is on the northern bank of the Orange River. Making a forced march from Prieska*, Col J. Adye reached the drift opposite Kheis on 26 May with a detachment comprising four guns, a company of the Gloucestershire regiment mounted infantry, the 32nd (Lancashire) company of the 2nd Imperial Yeomanry from Draghoender* and the 5th (Warwickshire) company of the 2nd Imperial Yeomanry from Kenhardt*. Leaving the latter with his guns to demonstrate at the drift, Adye took the remainder of his force to another drift eight kilometres upstream and came down the north bank to surprise the laager completely. All the women and children, many prisoners and thousands of head of cattle were taken. Of the British force of some 350, nine were killed and 18 wounded. HMG III pp.16 and 22-25 (map no.43); Times IV. pp.227-228 (map facing p.268).
A Gazetteer of the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 (Military Press, Milton Keynes 1999)

Note the casualty total in the Gaz from either The Times or Official History is 27. The mortally wounded could count towards the killed. Casualty totals are frustratingly inexact.

Morning Henk

Civilian Surgeon RC Dun 5 Company IY - The Times 19000604 - described as "Surgeon Captain", as he is on the medal roll which is crossed out and replaced with "Civilian Surgeon".
