Good Evening Everyone.....

I a looking for information on the following officer that served in the SOUTH AFRICA MOUNTED IRREGULAR FORCES.....

Here is his listing in FMP, there is no listing here in the Unit Information or Nominal Roll that I can find...….

First name(s) C J
Last name Walton
Service number
-
Rank Lieutenant
Regiment South African Mounted Irregular Forces
Literary references
The National Archives WO127. Nominal rolls colonial units.
Biography
-
Country Great Britain

The medal has the bars / clasps: CAPR COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL

Now here is my puzzlement....

The medal is named: SEC. LT. C.J. WALTON, S.A.M.I.F.

What is his official rank?????

SECOND Lt. In the book Services of BW officers, he is shown under SAMIF and as Lieutenant.
2nd Lt. rank introduced in the British army in 1877.

Good Evening IL.....

Thanks that is what I was thinking......

This would be the first time that I have seen it written out as SEC. and not as the number 2..... Also I have never seen this rank used in SA.....

Hope you are enjoying the weather. Re the "SEC. Lt" naming - well, can't think of anything else. I take it that the medal is impressed? Was the "SEC" an addition to the naming? It would be interesting to see a pic of the naming.
Keep warm

How strange, is the medal actually impressed, Mike?

Here are some pictures, the best I can do right now..... Frank the medal is engraved as you will see...… There is no evidence of re-naming as the edge is fairly equal all the way around except near the Queens shoulder where the unit name is located.....

Could some blank medals have been sent to SA and named there?????

Mike
