Hi Chris,
That's a nice pair and one that didn't grace the collection I gathered over the years. Back in the day, I had medals to 68 different men who served in the Boer War with the 9th and 109th Imp. Yeo. It would be wonderful if you could find his Yorkshire Tribute and you very well may one day as over the years, I managed to reunite at least six QSAs with their respective Tribute Medals. At any rate, I will look in Birkin's book to see if I can verify Wood's story. You may be able to obtain a copy via inter-library loan at your local library or at a near by university. I do that a lot and it's been very helpful over the years. The YH Magazine is another matter though; although perhaps a uni or local library would have those too. I have 95 percent of them and the series on the history of the regiment got to the South African Campaign in the last magazine published, Vol. X No. 42 October 1937. (pp. 234-8) It was never finished as WWII ended the publication of the journal. Occasionally they come up online for a nominal amount. Wood is verified in Birkin's nominal on the first page of No. 9 Squadron. 566 Sergeant Wood, S. jointed regiment on 27/01/1900. Promoted to SQMS on 07/05/1901; returned with regiment 06/08/1902 and was MID on 10/09/1901. I verified that via S. African War Honors and Awards 1899-1902 where he's listed on page 56. I also have a scrap book of newspaper clippings that list all of the troopers in the respective A Companies of the Yorkshire Dragoons and Yorkshire Hussars that is date 15 January 1901 and was in the Yorkshire Post. S. Wood is not listed, This is the first "Yorkshire Detachment" and so he may have gone out later on. S. Wood is listed in the group of men that were invalided home on the ship Mongolian. |

566 Sergeant Wood embarked for South Africa on the 28th of January 1900.
He served continuously until cessation of hostilities. www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collectio...BJs=true&pId=2347265 You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

Here's a list of known medals for the Yorkshire Hussars for the Anglo-Boer War 9TH COMPANY 1ST CONTINGENT
They are ordered by rank and/or regimental number. "C5" for example was the 5th medal/group in a Yorkshire Hussars Collection I assembled many years ago. It doesn't appear my reply with thanks has been recorded so just in case I will repeat it here. Many thanks for this abundance of information for which I am very grateful indeed. It demonstrates perfectly what a fascinating sub-theme the Imperial Yeomanry provides. I do have a single Tribute from Yorkshire Medal : 12219 Horace Ford of the 3rd Battalion. When I bought it I had the choice of two and opted for this example mainly as it was the 1900-1901 variety which I had not previously owned, A fortunate choice indeed as not only was Horace from Sheffield which is where I live (or nearly) but also he was at one time resident in a children's home (now a Leonard Cheshire home) which is about a mile from where I now sit. So, just about as 'local' as it could be. Once again, many, many thanks. Chris
