Hi Folks,
Firstly many thanks for all the assistance re. my GGF as above during the Boer War however this search is growing legs rapidly. I have his Boer War as 9/11/1899 to 27/7/1902, ASC, Blacksmith; confirmed, thanks again. I also have other documentation, see attached, that I read as that he re-joined the Army 3/9/1914 (awarded the 1914 Star) then transferred to the RFC as a Blacksmith 15/9/1917 (awarded the BW and V Medal) and discharged from the RAF 30/4/1920. I came across a document with him enlisting into the Royal Army Farrier Corps in 1921 but cannot find it now. It seems like an incredible service that very few have experienced and should not go unnoticed if correct.
For anyone up to a challenge (amateur or professionally) he was born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, Jan 1869 (some show 1871). Enlisted 20/07/1889, ASC, served in Ireland and SA (09/11/1899-27/07/1902) discharged 24/08/1902 - then enlisted 03/09/1914 - 30/04/1920 (Army?, RFC, RAF).
Documents used - UK Airforce Muster Role 1918, Airforce Airmen Records 1918-1940, Air 79/930.
Again, grateful of any assistance, professional or enthusiast,
Kind Regards,
AllanG

Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps 1917.

Dave,
thanks very much for that, the RFA had me stumped, many thanks. It seems William J is well served. Do you know if he would have kept his original service no.? Apologies for being a pain...

Allan
No need to apologise, his RAF papers refer to a Authority number. William's was 96731 as per my original post in the left hand column. This would be in my opinion his service number for his time in the 45th Brigade Royal Field Artillery (Royal Engineers). Interestingly, he was serving as a driver. I bet his blacksmith skills were also called upon during his time in theatre.

Bingo.........His medal card.
As you have already mentioned, a well served soldier indeed.
Regimental numbers 8913 ABW, 96731 & 103288 WW1

Best wishes
