The Naval Brigade picket. The Right Hon George Goshen, First lord of the Admiralty, in the course of a speech, said the Admiralty was enabled to assist the Army without depleting the Navy. The Naval Brigade has done admirable service at the Modder River and Graspan battles.

A kitchen on the veldt. The above illustration depicts Tommy Atkins, with a kitchen table made of railway sleepers and a stovepipe (over a mud oven) composed of empty paraffin tine, preparing dinner in the open. Hundreds of men have been provided with excellent meals from this improvised oven.
