I'm researching Private 5544 Charles Marshall who was killed in action on the 27th of October 1914 serving with the 1st Battalion The Wiltshire Regiment. He was born in March 1879 in Dundee. I am trying to find out more about his service with the 2nd Battalion The Wiltshire Regiment in the Boer War. He attested at Dundee on the 5th of March 1900 and was accepted on the 9th of that month. I'm uncertain why he ended up in the Wiltshires but it may just be that other regiments were full at that time, or any number of reasons. I would like more information on his Boer War Service.

I know he received the Kings South Africa Medal, South Africa 1901, 1902, 1903 but did not get the KSA but the date clasps on the QSA. I received this info from The Wardrobe "Person ID 6498 Reg 5544 Marshall C Private 2/Wilts ("D" Company) Clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal Roll date 15/7/1901 sheet 244 King's South Africa Medal South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 Roll date 14/3/1903 Naauworking partyoort sheet 324"

There is no service record for 5544 Marshall but there is a record for 5541 E Blackman search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=GBM/WO96/0974/032/004 (might be useful) 5542 Albert Shellley search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=GBM/WO97/5884/075/001 (doesn't help much?) search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=GBM/WO97/5884/075/001

5543 George Jones search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2F...WO96%2F979%2F1502540 (don't think it helps much)

and 5545 Edmund West search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=GBM/WO97/6205/128/004 which I think is useful.

Any help in joining the dots re his service would be much appreciated. When went to SA where served and when returned home. I know he was out of the Army by 1909 as he was married in Dundee that year and working in shipyards.

Mikky,

A short account of the 2nd Wiltshires is here: www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...2-wiltshire-regiment . There are also a link to the 2nd Bedfordhshire which explains their roll in more detail.

This account says 'The 2nd Battalion sailed on the Gascon on 16th December 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 7th January.'

The thread on the Wiltshires also contained useful information on their service: www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...ire-regiment?start=0

Many men in the 2nd Wiltshires received the same clasps as he, CC, OFS and Tr but some men were also at Wittebergen.

You already have this information but here it is in its original format.

WO100/197p244

The second roll is more usually called the Supplementary Roll and is completed for those serving in 1901 and 1902 who were not entitled to the KSA.

WO100/197p324

Best wishes
David

Private 5544 Charles Marshall would undoubtedly have been allocated to the Wiltshire Regiment in March 1900, due to two companies having been lost at Rensburg Siding (Now named Hugoslaagte) in February of that year.

I have commented on the various actions the Regiment took part in and have announced that my book "War on the Veldt - The Anglo-Boer War Experiences of The Wiltshire Regiment" is now finished and will I hope soon be published and available from The Rifles, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment Museum, Salisbury, in the Medals to the Wiltshire Regiment thread.

As David said, the QSA medal clasp entitlement for the Wiltshire's is mostly the standard the CC, OFS and TV, with some receiving WT as well ( Mostly those who weren't POW's by then or those who joined later). The most clasps awarded were six and those went to men employed with the Mounted infantry.

I would have liked to have been able to tell you something specific to Charles Marshall, but unfortunately he is not mentioned in Regimental Records other than the QSA medal roll.

Thank you. I will let the forum know. There should be a meeting to confirm publishing in August.
