I meant the object rather than the location - to me a bed plate is part of a machine such as an engine and can refer to what it is standing on. Perhaps in S Africa it means something different. Do you have a photo of it?

Thank you gentleman. Showing my ignorance again! But I don't remember coming across the expression used in this context before despite investigating in detail the contribution both my grandfathers and three of their brothers made to WW1. As they say you live & learn.
