TOPIC:

I have a DCM to an action fought at the above. The LG states that, ""At Winterskraal, Cape Colony, on 22nd April 1901, under heavy fire at 600 yards, went back to assist a wounded man, and brought him out of action."

I have looked through the index for the Times History as well as the British Newspaper Archive to no avail.

Help please - the recipient was with the SALH at the time so I imagine they were there.

Also there was a farm called Winters Kraal in the Smithfield district of the Orange Free State.

Thanks for your work on this Dave. Elne Watson was able to find me a map which confirms what you thought - that Winterskraal is indeed in the Wakkerstroom area. I attach for your and others reference.

It's coincidental but my recent post to Stoop of the Wakkerstroom Commando refers - he came from this neck of the woods and was, very likely, in combat with Dow (my DCM man for this action) on the day it happened.
