At the Archives last week, I looked at the Court Martial Register in WO92/4. This is described in the index as General courts martial: register, 1899 - 1917.

It consists of a large book containing hand-written entries for officers. The left page contains the name and rank, regiment, location of the court martial, date of trial and the date on which the proceedings were submitted to the King. The right hand page contains the nature of the charges and the sentence as approved by HM.

Only four of the double pages contain entries relating to the Boer War and these four pages contain a variety of location outside South Africa such as Aldershot, Devonport and Lichfield. The sentences handed down include acquittal, dismissal, being cashiered, reprimands and hard labour.

The offences cover desertion, enlisting after discharge with disgrace, 'shamefully delivering up a post', drunkenness and embezzling.

Here are some examples:

Lt JP Milne-Home, 1st HLI,, Bloemfontein (on line two after Captain G Scaife)

The entries for Lt M Newton, IY, Lt G Fitzgerald, Reserve of Officers, and Lt C Lambert, IY:

All three were cashiered.

WO92/4 contains only officers. On my next visit, I will look at the other document in this series.

W F Hamilton of the IY was given 2 years of hard labour and forfeited his medal for embezzling public money.

2nd Lt C Holland, 1st Border Regiment, was cashiered and given one year of hard labour for 'uttering a forged document'

Those same files can be accessed on "Fold 3" via Ancestry in
"All UK, Naval and Military Courts Martial Registers, 1806-1930" in the Military Section of their records

It appears Lieutenant Thomas Patrick Milne Home was subsequently exonerated & reinstated and promoted to Captain in April 1901.

The above link gives you a photo of him in uniform and his grave headstone (he died in 1956) and a very long & detailed write-up on him.

Thank you, Pete.

I do not have a subscription to Fold3 so this is good to know.

Best wishes
