Paul – my final planned update specifically on the life & times of Bensley Frederick Butterfield.

The name of Frederick Butterfield lives on in East Dereham Cemetery in Norfolk.

His name also lives on as Bensley F Butterfield in Walsall, Staffordshire. To see it you will need to gain access to Walsall Town Hall in Lichfield Street.

This link takes you to a photograph and information on the memorial in Walsall Town Hall - I can just make out the name of Bensley F Butterfield in the photograph:

www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/38580

The memorial was originally erected in the Drill Hall, Walsall (location yet to be determined) but transferred to the Town Hall when the Drill Hall was demolished. It was originally unveiled in late May 1901, when many of the men listed were still serving in South Africa and before the 3rd VSC was mustered let alone had arrived in South Africa. So you could say it should be a foot or two taller!

Eventually I shall be doing a separate post regarding this and other associated memorials – already I have determined that at least 3 of the men listed lost their lives in the Great War.

RIP Fred.
