Hello Frank,
I live in East Northamptonshire - once the hub of the boot and shoe industry. Harry was born in Kettering and lived there prior to his foray to SA he then came back and settled in Rushden with his family, where he worked in the shoe trade as did many strains of my mother's family.

Thank you for your help

Hello all

Dixon does not appear on the medal rolls for Steinaecker's Horse which indicates he never went on active operations with them.

Pietermaritzburg was the site of a large depot for the colonial units, it is highly likely Dixon never left PMBG on active service. He was either rejected or decided not to pursue a military career.

Hello Paula,
I think that a search in WO126/141 would probably prove fruitless to be honest, as Brett has said on here, this would have already been done by Woolmore, I know he was pretty explicit in his research for his book.
This was not the usual type of Colonial unit, it was differant for a number of reasons and as I said, you joined on probation, if you did not make the grade, you were kicked out, Steinaecker saw to that.
Is there anything else you can tell us about Dixon?
Regards Frank

Hello Frank,

I have asked my mother if she can remember anything else about her grandfather, the only thing she can come up with is that whilst here he was a keen member of the St. John Ambulance. We just wondered whether he was involved in the medical side of things in the Boer War?

Not much to go on, but I'll keep asking family members.

Thanks for your help

Hello Paula,
The St John Ambulance issued a medal for service during the Boer War and I think you can get the roll on ancestry, might be worth at least a search, if you know he was in during the war.

Hello Paula
I too have Harry Sturges Dixon in my family tree as my maternal great great grandfather. His daughter Edith Poole Dixon born 1896 in SA is my great grandmother and the great aunt you mention in an earlier post.
Harry had returned to the UK by 31 March 1901 where he appears on the census living in Kettering, Northamptonshire.
I have several photos of Harry & Emma and their children over the years.
It would be great to hear from you as I'm pretty sure we are related.
