Hi

The late Trevor Davies of Roberts Medals ran off some photocopies (2 volumes) in the early 1990's from originals in one or other museum (I seem to remember Kimberley). I bought a set for something like £150, but fortunately I also have it on computer, as the original hard copy is difficult to search.

Hello Henk,
I agree with you, I had found some of Roberts Medals publications a bit of a pain to search too, but there was nothing much on the internet in those days, so they had there uses!

That has reminded me of the excitement and wonder of purchasing those printed medal rolls. I can still remember perusing the Defence of Kimberley roll when I bought a copy and thinking how wonderful it was. In its time it was an amazing source of information.

Hello David,
Yes, I know exactly how you must have felt, it was the same for me too when I got my hands on a copy of Don Forsyth's Kimberley Roll, I thought I'd won the lottery.
There are always a few errors though, I remember a case in point which provoked me to make a visit to Kew, Pte G Wills Kimberley Town Guard, who was not shown on Don's roll, I was very pleased to find him on the original roll and I can see why Don managed to miss him, as there is a Corporal J Wills actually below him, it should be the other way round, you would expect to find the Corporal above the Privates!
He was one of my first KTG's too!
Still, very happy days indeed, thanks for reminding me about them David.
Kind regards Frank

Hello

Ian answered my query with lighting speed:

"No, this is not a published work. I had the roll of 15,000 names and particulars of Boer POW’s at the time. I believe that the Bloemfontein Boer War Museum at the Vrouemonument has one and that an index has been drawn up. "

The War Museum in Bloemfontein has a searchable index on-line amongst other rolls.

So that mystery solved - thanks Frank for Ian's email.

Hi Meurig,
You are welcome, I did not think he had ever published that roll and I have found the museum at Bloemfontein www.anglo-boer.co.za to be the way go as far as the "other side" are concerned!
