Judith,
I would say this was just an error and a zero should have been put in after the 1 in 3/1/02, his active service is very clear when you read the rest of his papers in WO364, with the all important dates being shown.
There is no question of his overseas service in South Africa, moreover you have his roll entries in WO100.
