Hi all,

Many thanks for your helpful replies.

David, I am based up North but have planned a short trip to London next month, so i'll be visiting the National Archives and a few other collections which should be very interesting. I have read up on Emily Hobhouse and came across lots of mentions of her reports in Hansard's parliamentary debates. I have just found an online copy of her The Brunt of War and Where it Fell so will be reading that soon.

Justin, I have come across Spies' Methods of Barbarism and have it on my reading list but have yet to get round to it - I will make it a priority! I had not come across Hackett's, so many thanks for that. Many thanks also for the link, I actually didn't know that existed until last night when I came across it somewhere else on this forum (thank god I found the forum!!).

Meurig and Frank, many thanks for the warm welcome and for your helpful information - I am sure I will be back with more questions throughout my research!

Thanks all,

Jen

Hi

sorry for the tardy reply - it is the final day before handing in my PhD so have been a tad focussed :-) You can find the list of nurses who served in the camps on my website. They were originally built and run by the Army but were then handed over to a civil authority under Milner. Some of the doctors and nurses were military but the majority were civilians employed for the camps. The Government sent out a Committee of Ladies under Mrs Fawcett (a well know lady and suffragette) and her report is available as a download if I can find it!

There are also some very good articles written by Elizabeth von Heyningen which are also available online. These contain some excellent statistics and insights. See if you can find this one:

Van Heyningen, E. (2010) Pietermaritzburg Concentration Camp. Natalia. 40(20110) pp62-76

I have attached another one of her articles.

Hope that helps
