If a recipient of medals in my collection died on the 19th November 1902 while still in South Africa; and a pension in respect to this death is given to the widow for life, would he be considered a casualty?
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.

Good Morning David.....

It would depend on what he died from..... Was it wounds rec'd while in combat or service, died from a disease that caused him to be discharged..... If so then he would be classified as a casualty.....

I had at one time a memorial plaque and Canadian Memorial Cross to a man who died from wounds rec'd in 1917 and died in 1934.....

I was hoping you would say because he was in reciept of a pension he must be at least considered so by the authorities.

Can you give more details about the recipient and his service? It would then be easier to cross reference with other cases.

I wonder if the fact that he died in South Africa would have a bearing in this case? Could it be construed that he was there, or left there for a reason directly related to the war and, therefore, he was a casualty of the war? If he had already returned to India, the connection would have seemed more tenuous, even though the cause of death was the same.

Regards
Brett
