One of my ancestors fought in the Hellenic Corps which I believe was for the British side. Apparently greeks fought on both sides. I came across a fascinating analysis of the mix of attitudes that the Greeks in South Africa had to the war.

I'm still looking for more information on my ancestor if anyone knows of a good database for foreign fighters in the war.

One of the many companies that made up the Capetown Town Guard (1901-02) was a 'Hellenic Company'. There was already a small Greek community in the city, which, presumably, raised the company. IIRC, there is a photo of them in Souvenir of Cape Town and Suburban Town Guard (1901).

His name was Stavros Michel. OK Hellenic Company not Corps. I didn’t know they were part of the Cape Town town guard. That might help with searching the records. I think I’ve seen the photo you mentioned. Thanks!
