Nice to see which J.Riley it actually was in the 1965 pic. Did your ID come from personal/family knowledge? I had a look in the MYB and J.Riley's 5th medal certainly looks like the Italian Al Valore. Awarded in two classes; Bronze and Silver. It's suspension is different to that of British/Empire/Commonwealth medals; the ribbon crowds very close around the top. That medal awarded to an Australian would certainly be very unusual. Perhaps you might have a look on AWM and ANA sites to see if you can obtain more info on that aspect.

I have a 'Boer War Tasmania' site on Facebook, and featured Riley on there. One of his family has also contributed info and photos as well. Yes, the medal is a rare one.
