Despite the clipping, quoting Capt. De Kock, I think the TG members were paid whilst on duty. One of the chaps in my collection - A.E. Stewart, Mafeking TG - is recorded in Colin Walker's "Mafeking Siege Register" as "given trench rates". He served in Sector C.

I did see a reference to trench rates being seven shillings and sixpence - but I am blowed if I can find it in the Walker book.
