Throughout the Medal rolls for the QSA in the top left hand corner is often a reference number which I have seen used to reference roll but also other medal related items. I presume these were used prior to the now National Archives WO/100/.... number. Can anyone explain them to me?

eg "A.G.2/M/......"
and "68/S.A/...."

Can these reference numbers be used to locate documents or are they redundant?
Many thanks

David

David,

I think they did pre-date the WO100 references. I also think they are still valuable because the reference between rolls use them.

Someone sent me a list of these numbers some time ago. I will dig out the list and post them here.

We can then see how useful they are.

Best wishes

I have often seen these numbers and puzzled over them. It would be great if you could give us an idea if they are now meaningful.
Best regards

Here's the first stab at making the information I have available: angloboerwar.com/other-information/91-re...ory/2981-ag2-numbers

More explanation is needed and I also need to find an example of a cross-reference to show how the numbers are used.

Now here is the conundrum. In the rolls there is annotations with the A.G/S.A prefix references which I have presumed cross references other rolls. But not always....... By chance I found A.G./M/12752. This reference number is beside a notation "Bronze medals sent by G.O.C South Africa to India. See A.G.2/M/12752"

This reads....

" 9100 bronze medals .... issued. In future medals for distribution to units serving in India may be sent to the Govt of India Military Department (Medal Base) Calcutta direct.
Roll for silver medals (K&Q) now in hand. To note

A.S 10/12/02"

Not in itself stunning news but these reference numbers run along side other notations relating to issue of clasps for bronze medals and other mundane subjects.

None of which can I find referenced and may be of interest.

An example of a cross reference for you is The Supply and Transport Corps,Bengal Command , Meerut is A.G.2/M/13145. This number is on the roll,on the index to the rolls and on a list prepared for the date the medals were prepared/tallied (?)

David,

I don't think we have gained a full picture of the AG numbers and the conundrum continues.

The list of AG2s I added yesterday, 1506 in total, is a subset of the full list of AG2 numbers. I am not sure what percentage of the total this 1506 represents.

From scanning the list of units yesterday, I know there are units missing. I don't recall any Indian units listed.

I will post a list of the numbers by unit later today.

I did notice yesterday in looking at the 10th Hussars roll, there are more AG2 than are listed in the 1506. Most of the main blocks of pages from the roll have their own AG2 (which are included in the 1506) but at the end of the roll, where all the single issues are listed, none of these seem to be listed in 1506 available here.

More work needed.

Best wishes
David
