Thank you all for your kind comments. James Howells was a rewarding research subject. My contact with the Simon's Town Historical Society, Audrey Read, remembers playing with one of Howells' granddaughters in the Seaforth house. She was also able to put me in touch with one of Howells' grandsons, who lives in one of Cape Town's southern suburbs. The medals and some papers came from a now-deceased grandson who lived in Durban.
Doug, British settlers in South Africa used many British place names and the names of important British historical people to name local towns, suburbs and streets, presumably to remind themselves of home. The Cape Town suburb referred to above is 'Plumstead', which has a British ring to it. In the days of Colonial Natal (pre-1910), "home" meant Britain. SA's new government is busy correcting this misapprehension.
