Patrick,

The approach I use is to cover a cork board with black velvet and then mount the medals in such a way that they can be pinned to the board without the pin showing through. The display is vertical so that gravity aligns the medals just about vertically and all I have to do is to align them horizontally.

Here is an example of a medal mounted for wall display. The small piece of cardboard is glued to the back of the ribbon.

Best wishes
David

This is how that medal looks when viewed from an angle. The pin mounting is visible from the side but not when viewed from the front.

I know Peter Munday was doing this with his medals in Zimbabwe. He however just scored the card backing and folded it over. It gave a really sharp edge to the top when the ribbon was folded over.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.

David,

Agreed. That top edge does look good. This mounting method also stops the medal from seeming to drag down the ribbon which happens if the ribbon is folded over and then secured.

Some people cut narrow slits in card and feed the ribbon through but I have never found this technique to turn out very neat.

Best wishes
