Earlier today I was shown a copy of this newly published book:

'Hill of Squandered Valour. The Battle of Spion Kop, 1900.'
by Ron Lock
Casemate Publishers, Newbury.

Followers of literature on the Zulu War will know of Ron Lock's scholarly works on this war and those of us with a particular interest in the Boer War will be pleased by what I suspect will be seen as the definitive work on the Battle of Spion Kop.

Hello Brett

Thanks for the notification, just ordered a copy. I have taken a keen interest in Spion Kop from a casualty roll point of view.

Should be interesting.

Thanks for the heads-up, Brett!
Just ordered a copy and hopefully it will make it to me in Taiwan by Christmas. I met Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill at Talana several years ago during the ABW Centenary when I took a section from the Transvaal Scottish down to the Dundee festival. Ron & Peter roped us into a reenactment of the storming of Talana. They reckoned we looked the part even if there weren't any Kilties at Talana. Here's a shot of a couple of Jocks slotting in behind an KRRC section.

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

That's a great picture is a very historic location.

Not like the Scots though to line up willingly behind the English troops??

Best wishes

David, We let them get a bit of action seeing it was first battle and all. Actually, they were quite strange "English troops" - they turned into 2/24th Welshmen after lunch and fought Zulus while us Kilties sat down with the Z.A.R. STAATS ARTILLERIE and taught them how to drink whisky. When they fell down the Jocks captured "Oude Grietjie."

Cheers,

Mark
