I have a silver tobacco tin which was presented to my great (or great-great) Grandfather, "by his Fellow Townsmen" (no mention of the women!!) of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire".

It also says: Presented to Pte. G H Radley Vol.A.S.Co. Lincolnshire Regiment".

What does AS stand for and do we know any theatre the Lincs Reg fought in during the SA War?
Thanks

Hi,

That normally means Volunteer Service Company. Is that definitely an 'A'?

On the medal rolls for the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment is 6662 Pte G Radley with entitlement to the clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.

A short history of the regiment can be found here: www.angloboerwar.com/imperial-units/2053-lincolnshire-regiment

I could not find any service papers for him nor evidence of service during the Great War.

If would be interesting to see the tobacco box if you can upload a picture?

Best wishes
David

I think that means A

My grandfather G.H.Burn was also presented with a similar inscribed silver box.
I wonder if they were similar? Unfortunately his has disappeared.
Do you have a photo?
Best wishes

First of all, I took a magnifying glass to the tobacco tin and yes, it is an A. the engraving says this: "VOL. A.S.Co." So I think that means he was a volunteer in the "A.S. Company" of the Lincolnshire Regiment. Not sure what that means of course.

Yes, I will try to upload a photo. I've only just acquired the camera and whether I can get it to capture the engraving well enough is the $64,000 question :) But I'll try.

I am going to follow up the other links you dear men sent because this is absolutely the first time I have ever found any details about my Radley side and I've been trying to do my family hisotry for many years.

I am SO excited and hope this link will be a lead to more discoveries. If he was my great-grandfather, his father was Wilfred Radley but he could have been another relative from Gainsborough.

Now with grateful thanks I'll go away and see if I can get some decent photos of this tobacco tin and then comes the puzzle of how to upload it so you can see it :)

Back soon
Kind regards to all

Here are a couple of photos which I hope will serve.

At the very top of the engraving is the strangest thing, to say this was made for a veteran of the SA War. It's a small drawing of a Sphinx, beneath which, in small capitals, it says EGYPT.

I wonder why that was included?

An image of the sphinx atop the word 'Egypt' is the main feature of the badge of the Lincolnshire Regiment.
