Perhaps her son had not been writing home, so his mother included stamps in the belief that this would encourage him to put pen to paper and/or stamps were required on military mail and her son could not afford them.

I'll go with that, Brett. Thank you, all, for answering my query.

I would not be at all surprised if the Victorians enjoyed a rather better service than is provided today between the two, I dare say the intended recipient could at the very least expect to actually receive any item sent!

Frank
At least there are now courier companies that bypass the need to use the SA PO, provided of course that you have deep pockets.

Good gracious Brett, now there is a thought, Christmas cards by courier, notwithstanding, I suppose they could be expected to be received the same year in which they were actually sent!

Just going through some older posts on another wet day at home and I had a chuckle to myself when I read the above comment from Frank about how the Victorians of the era enjoyed a better service of mail delivery than we do today. I found this interesting article below, please enjoy -

(The Telegraph, Brisbane Qld., Saturday 2 Apr, 1904)

It's good to read that not all soldiers either had their mail and/or packages lost, looted or burnt, some went lost but were eventually found a little lighter than they started off with.
