Indeed, the war cast a very long shadow, the loss of life and level of suffering was, quite frankly, appalling, still, I dare say the Colonial secretary and his family were rather less concerned about that, they would, however, doubtless, be very pleased with all those rather full order books of the various companies that they owned!

I agree with you. As is always the case in such wars, the men with blood on their hands shed none of their own. Although the Boer War is commemorated in other countries of the old Empire, it is only in South Africa that its adverse social consequences are still felt. These are, however, much less evident now that the realities of life in the 21st Century are upon us.
