This advert appeared in several South wales' newspapers around the end of April/early May 1901.

There must have been photographs taken of the balloon, I'm certain.

There is also page WO100/155p97 to four civilians attached to the Balloon Section RE, three electricians and 1 fireman. They are also noted as "Searchlight Crew".

I have two of these four medals, as expected for medals to civilians, there is no unit making them rather delightful finds.

This is the medal to HH McMutrie - as you can see it has battle bars which is exceedingly rare for a civilian QSA, the medal to A Bell was issued without clasps as indicated on the roll.

The response showing the soap tin showing a balloon rung a distant bell. Now I will apologize in advance for the poor quality of the attachment. It is from a old film camera color print made years ago showing a ABW Display I set up at the Houston Gun Show. You can barely make out in the upper right the image of the balloon. It's on a fabric tablecloth about a meter square, reddish brown on beige background (to the best of my memory). Sadly it was sold mid 1980s with most of my first ABW Collection.
I recall it was a German made textile sold in the U.K. But I purchased it in a street market in Vienna in the early 70's.
Again apologies for the quality. BP
