A "Herbert James G Beech" served with Loch's Horse and the Orange River Colony Police.

Could he have been recruited in the UK?

According to Stirling, Loch's Horse was "largely recruited in England".

A bit of additional information on the Beeches - they were married at St James's Church, Swansea, on 17th June 1890. In 1897 H. J. G. Beech had taken a studio in Kensington, London, and since 1899 had refused to live with his wife, and declined to provide a home for her.
