Hi Frank

My research showed him to be Johannes Gerhardus Van Buuren born in 1870

Was it Normal for a Afrikaans South African to be an Officer in the ASC? According to the Name search on this site the JG van Buuren you have here would seem to be a Boer Combatant who was sent to St Helena. There was a Trooper Van Buuren in the BVC who was murdered. So i am not so sure it is in fact Van Buuren .

Not normal but not unheard of - it is the closest fit I could find to your man - there were a large number of Johannes Gerhardus Van Buuren's around -as you most likely know with the propensity among the Afrikaners to continue the "family names" throughout the succeeding generations it is very possible that there were two different chaps with the same name fighting on different sides.

You will also note that there were a variety of permutations - Johan Gerhard's/Johannes Gerhardus'/Johan Gerhardus/Johannes Gerhard etc.

Rory

Van Buuren Johannes Gerhardus Prisoner number: 4286
Captured: Paardeberg 27 Feb 1900
Sent to: St. Helena, Deadwood
Age: 29
Address: Matjesdoorns
Source: Anglo Boer War Museum 2016

I hear you but I think the death certificate you have is for this chap as the birth date of 1870 as you state would match his age at time if incarceration and death.

If the man is correctly identified, I am just rather surprised by the naming, which, from the photographs is very typical and very much the usual high standard that you would expect from the skilled engravers, unless, the transcript he was actually working from was wrong, but, then you have the name as it appears in respect of the KSA to consider too, which would also be incorrect.

I have edited the pictures to make the naming a little easier to see
