Hi all and many thanks for the access to the sight. Im in the midst of putting together a family tree for my partner. Her great great grandfather was in cape town in 1899 for at least 2 years, he was from Texas of German heritage. Anyways we came across the attached picture in his belongings, not sure if its a personal pic or postcard, and wondered if it shed light on what he was doing in Cape town. His name is Charles Phillip Menger and i cant find any record of him fighting there.

Labled as "Boer Commando passing through Johannesberg"

So probably not a photo he took himself, more likely a souvenir?

There's some writing in the bottom right-hand corner, which could indicate that it was taken by a professional photographer. Depends what it says.

That is the copywrite owner Alamy, Bernice. Also owned by Getty Images & Granger Images. I think that the image is probably a souvenir of the war.
As a research tool, I find TinEye useful . Just load your image onto the site & you get a list of where the image has been used on bilions of websites & copywrite ownership.
